Low Blood Glucose (BG) Protocol
Unresponsive patient with known diabetes
Give Glucagon 1mg IM x1
Obtain BG
Notify medical staff, following Blood Glucose situation
Consider narcotic overdose and administer naloxone (Narcan) if appropriate.
BG < 70 and patient unable to take food by mouth or by feeding tube
Give Glucagon 1mg IM x1
Notify medical staff, following Blood Glucose situation
BG < 70 and patient is able to take food by mouth or by feeding tube
Give Carbohydrate (CHO) according to BG:
BG < 40 Give 30gm CHO
BG 40 - 50 Give 25gm CHO
BG 51 - 60 Give 20gm CHO
BG 61 - 70 Give 15gm CHO
Recheck BG in 15 minutes; If BG remains <70, Repeat CHO as in table above.
Recheck BG in 15 minutes; if BG remains <70 Give Glucagon 1mg IM x1 and notify medical staff, following Blood Glucose situation
Each of the following foods contain approximately 15 gm of CHO:
4 ounces (half a cup) fruit juice
4 ounces (half a cup) regular soft drink / soda (Not sugar-free)
8 ounces SKIM milk
1 tablespoon of granulated sugar, jelly, or honey
1 tube instant glucose
4 glucose tablets
Symptoms and Signs of Low Blood Glucose (Hypoglycemia):
cold sweats
unresponsiveness
vivid nightmare
palpitations
hunger
headache
tremor
weakness
seizure
anxiety
changes in mental status
blurred vision
